Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira was born June 2nd, 1976 along with his identical twin brother Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, in the town of Vitoria da Conquista, Brazil. At the age of 5 he began training in Judo. At the age of 10 he would be hit by a truck and slip into a coma for four days. When he awoke he discovered that he had lost a rib and part of his liver due to the accident. He also received the large scar on his back that now serves as an easy way to tell he and his brother apart. After the accident he would take up boxing, and when he turned 14 a friend would invite him to the gym of Ricardo de la Riva Goded to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In 1999 he received his black belt in both Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
In June of 1999 he would make his MMA debut at World Extreme Fighting 6, defeating David Dodd by submission. By the end of the year, and into the next he would join with the RINGS organization and participate in the King of Kings competition. His only loss within RINGS would be to Dan “Dangerous” Henderson. When RINGS dissolved, Antonio would follow the paths of many of it’s fighters and move on to the PRIDE organization.
Antonio Rodrigo is a heavyweight fighter within the PRIDE organization and has defeated an impressive number of opponents since 2001 with his involvement in PRIDE 15. Some of his victories include Mark Coleman, Heath Herring, and even a rematch against Dan Henderson. From 2001 to 2003 he would be the undefeated PRIDE Heavyweight champion, but a loss to the Russian born Fedor Emelianenko by unanimous decision would lose him the title. A rematch between Antonio Rodrigo and Fedor (for the championship) was scheduled for August, 2004, but an accidental cut would end the fight in a “No Contest”. Four months later the fight would resume, but Antonio Rodrigo once again lost the fight, and his chance at the championship, due to unanimous decision in Fedor’s favor.
So far in his PRIDE career Antonio has suffered three losses. Two against bitter rival Fedor Emelianenko and a recent loss against Josh Barnett in September, 2006. Antonio Rodrigo’s twin brother, Antonio Rogerio also fights within the PRIDE organization, but is much smaller in size, fighting in the middleweight category.
