For a man like Ken Shamrock, fame and fortune has been no easy task. Life has given him a good deal of lemons, and with it he managed to make lemonade, open a franchise, and corner the lemonade market (in a nut shell). His professional nickname is “The World’s Dangerous Man”, which applies to both his fighting style and his life. He is one of the few individuals who have shined enough in his professional career to earn a spot in the UFC Hall of Fame. Due to a lifelong supply of injuries, Shamrock has never actually won a UFC tournament. But he has proved time and time again that he is a capable fighter with concrete punches, superior submission moves, and quite talented at grappling.

On February 11th 1964, Ken Shamrock was born Kenneth Wayne Kilpatrick. Most of his young life was spent in some kind of trouble. Abandoned as a child he would live day to day in cars. He would also find himself in and out of juvenile halls and group homes, until he ended up at a foster home known as the “Shamrock Ranch for Boys” run by Bob Shamrock. Bob would eventually legally adopt Ken and become the good father that Ken never had while growing up (Ken would legally change his name in tribute to Bob for turning his life around). Bob would also have an outstanding impact on Ken’s future career.

While attending high school, Bob would encourage Ken to participate in sports such as Wrestling and Football. Ken would do very well in both sports. But as a high school wrestler he would be undefeated. On his way towards claiming a state championship a devastating injury would occur.

While in a typical practice session, Ken would fracture two vertebrae. Surgery was required, and a metal halo was screwed into his skull in order to keep his spine from shifting in place. Ken was giving strict doctor’s orders to not perform any serious or strenuous activity for a full year, and told that he would never be able to return to contact sports. Born defiant and unconcerned with the odds, Ken would follow doctor’s orders for about two months. Soon he would be lifting weights and playing sports, unconcerned with the severity of his medical state.

Bob would also encourage the young man to continue doing what he loved, suggesting in 1988 that Ken try out for Pro Wrestling. After short careers with the ACW and  South Atlantic Pro Wrestling Ken would join Japan’s UWF in 1990. It would be there that he would meet Masakatsu Funaki and Minoru Suzuki, who would later invite Ken to join their new shoot fighting organization which would be come to be known as Pancrase.

In 1993 Ken would debut in Pancrase, winning his first 3 fights. Later that year he would enter the very first UFC event held in November in Denver, Colorado. During the event he would progress as far as the semi-finals. It is assumed that Ken would likely have won the entire event if he did not have to face Royce Gracie in his second match. Royce, being quite the legend himself, defeated Ken by getting him into a rear naked choke in less than a minute into the first round. This victory was often considered to be a fluke by Ken and many of his fans, and “The World’s Dangerous Man” would vow to avenge his loss in a rematch that would surely have to occur.

After a reasonable run in Pancrase events, Shamrock would return for UFC 3. Despite two wins against Christophe Leninger and Felix Mitchell, Shamrock would not fight in the final bout. Though it mattered little as his preferred opponent Royce Gracie was too exhausted to fight in the finals and his side threw in the towel. Returning to Pancrase shortly after, Shamrock would do very well including winning the King of Pancrase tournament.

Finally, a year and a half later after his loss to Royce Gracie, the two would meet up again at UFC 5 -Return of the Beast-. It was billed as the “Superfight”. Not connected with the UFC championship, Superfight’s purpose was to determine once and for all which of the two greatest fighters in the world simply was the best. People had been screaming for a rematch between Shamrock and Gracie since UFC 1, and this was their chance to see it in action. Though in the end it disappointed more than impressed.

After Royce’s long fight with Dan Severn during UFC 4, prompting outraged viewers to demand their money back when the fight went over the time allotment for the Pay-Per-View airing, time limits had been instated. Shamrock and Gracie would end up fighting for the entire 30 minute match (including a 5-minute overtime) which would eventually lead to a draw when Shamrock managed to withstand one of Gracie’s submission attacks just long enough for the round to end. With no judges to make a decision, the fight was considered a draw. This upset Royce Gracie and his fans to no end, as the time limits had posed a serious restriction on his patient fighting style. Though the purist of MMA fans consider the fight a classic, most simply agree that it was long and boring. Neither fighter was willing to put up a strong offense leading to quite a few breaks in the action. Fans would demand yet another rematch from the two fighters, but when the Gracies pulled out of the UFC after UFC 5 it would inadvertently insure that Ken and Royce would never face-off again.

Shamrock would find himself to be the special guest at several “Superfights” during future UFC events. A defeat against Dan “The Beast” Severn during UFC 6. A draw to Oleg Takarov during UFC 7. And another win against Kimo Leopoldo at UFC 8. At UFC 9 however, Shamrock and Severn would face off one more time and lose by decision at the end of the 30 minute fight. This would prompt Shamrock to take a break from the UFC (joining PRIDE events in the mean-time) and would not return again until 2002.

Tito Ortiz would spark Shamrock’s return at UFC 40. A feud between the two had been started when Tito Ortiz had gone on a winning streak against members of “The Lion’s Den”, a fighting group that Ken Shamrock had founded. The feud began when Tito Ortiz defeated Lion’s Den member Guy Mezger and publically ridiculed him after the fight. The fight between Ortiz and Shamrock became one of the highest selling pay-per-view events for the MMA in America. People wanted to see if Shamrock would finally put an end to Ortiz’s insults or if Ortiz really could back up his talk. At the end of the third round, Shamrock became to exhausted and hurt to fight, and his corner was forced to throw in the towel.

In 2005, Shamrock would return for a great moment in UFC history: The first ever UFC broadcast on basic cable. With Spike TV’s creation of “The Ultimate Fighter”, a show that brought together the newest generation of fighters and promising one of them a contract with the UFC, the channel was allowed to broadcast the event that pit the best the show had to offer against each other for the grand prize. The main event however would be Ken Shamrock versus the up-and-coming Rich Franklin. Franklin would easily take down Shamrock in the first round, establishing level of threat within the UFC.

Despite his concern on his future in the UFC and the MMA after his match with Franklin, he was approached by the UFC president, Dana White, and asked if he would be a coach on the third season of Ultimate Fighter. The other coach would turn out to be long-time rival Tito Ortiz. But now they would have to settle their ongoing feud through the fights of those they would train and pit against each other.

Ken currently lives in Texas with his wife Tonya, his three sons and one daughter. He continues to owe most of his life to the only father-figure he had growing up, Bob Shamrock. Even with the lack of an actual championship victory within the UFC, in 2003 during UFC 45 Ken Shamrock was inducted into the newly created UFC hall of fame, along with Royce Gracie. It is unclear how much more steam Shamrock has to offer when in the ring, as his fights have become few and far between as of late. But it is likely that his wisdom and expertise will help train many more fighters to come.

UFC 60 Bitter Rivals: Ken Shamrock finally gets his rematch against Tito Ortiz and it is a very short battle. Shamrock comes out swinging, but Ortiz manages to maneuver him around to where he can pick him up and slam him.  Ortiz then manages to maneuver Shamrock to the fence, get him in position and then drop five straight elbows on Shamrock’s face.  Shamrock appears to go limp after the first two, but due to what he sees as Shamrock’s failure to intelligently defend himself, Herb Dean stops the fight one minute and eighteen seconds in. After the fight, near pandemonium.  Shamrock pops up immediately and is in complete disbelief.  He starts after Tito but heavy in ring security stops him.  Completely disgusted, Shamrock leaves the ring before the decision is announced.  He’s shown shortly thereafter angrily shouting “bulls—t” on the way out.  The crowd boos the early stoppage heavily, and even Michael Buffer has to stop announcing the decision and start over.  Given the microphone, Ortiz defends Herb Dean’s decision and puts forth the idea of fighting Shamrock again.  He also declare himself “non-injury free” (huh?)  The commentators bandy the idea of a rematch with Chuck Liddell.
