Topic: Pinched Sciatic Nerve

Friends,

Yes, I am injured again. This time I think it is a sciatic nerve problem. At least from what I have read. I am going to see a doctor today hopefully. Has anyone else here ever experienced this sort of injury?

My symptoms are terrible. I have a stabbing pain in that beginsat my lower neck and travels into my shoulder region and then down to my lower spine. I cannot look to my left with out intense pain.

If I do force my upper body to look left the pain travels down my spine though my lower legs. If I sneeze or breath too deeply the pain is even worse and more wide spread.

I cannot lay flat down on my back. I have to sleep elevated during the night. I have difficulty walking without pain and I cannot bend over to pick things up from the floor.

Wish me luck folks. I am really messed up this week. I seriously need some pain medication and maybe some muscle relaxers. It sucks getting older.

Re: Pinched Sciatic Nerve

Hey Jas,

I feel for ya, man. I too am out indefinitely with an injury and its' killing me.

That sounds pretty nasty - I'd definitely get in and see a doc ASAP. I have a messed up neck that bugs me from time to time (to the point of being flat on my back for a couple of days). I used to see a chiropractor for this which usually gave some temporary relief from the pain, until my MD suggested I stopped doing this because of possible long term damage to my cervical column.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Re: Pinched Sciatic Nerve

I hope you get better.. I got injured last wk too. Went for a block on someone on fastbreak and got upended.. landed on my head and spine.

Keep us posted

Re: Pinched Sciatic Nerve

Jas,

Good luck brutha!  I have a sciatica problem once as well, but the pain originated from much lower than that.  Started in my buttock and went into lower back.  I have never heard of it reaching as high as the neck, but the doctor today will know a lot more than i do.

Good luck.

jas-

i wish you well.  like FistK i had a pinched sciatic nerve, but it started much lower in my back.  it was caused from my pregnancy. so it went away as soon as i had my daughter.

but it sucked.  being 25 pounds heavier with all that weight right in the middle and then the baby just sitting on that nerve.  it made it impossible to move my last few weeks of pregnancy.

anywho - good luck!! i will send you good thoughts today.

Re: Pinched Sciatic Nerve

i have a pinched siatic in my back. Have had it for 4months now. At first was so painfull all i could do is stand. Sitting, laying it all hurt.

I went for treatments for 2 months and it really did nothing but burn my cash. I am just now starting to lift lightly, and am gonna start hitting the tread mill. If it starts to hurt im gonna stop but i am gonna try and heal myself with some light exercise.

Re: Pinched Sciatic Nerve

The number of sciatica sufferers on here is crazy! I've had trouble with mine for the past 5-6 months. Mine is lower in origin like most of you guys. I went to the doctor a couple of times with no real help. He just prescribed some pain killers and muscle relaxers (which did next to nothing) and told me to get a back support pillow.
There's some good info out there about core exercises and stretches to help alleviate some of the pain due to muscle imbalances. Other than those I haven't been able to get much relief from anything.
I hope your back gets healed up soon, Jas. It has to be one of the worst places to injure since there's really no way to baby it while living your normal life.

Re: Pinched Sciatic Nerve

Good luck at the doc today, hoss. My grandfather had sciatic nerve trouble as he got older, but actually had a good way to increase blood to the smaller muscles and nerves in his lower back to promote healing. Yoga. Picture a 70yr old ex-marine with blurred out tats on his forearms stretching and twisting himself into odd positions. He'd never admit it though, of course. He'd also get massages for the same reason, to get blood moving. He couldn't negotiate the stairs when he was 65, but at 70 he won the golf tourney at his local country club. Figure that one out.

Re: Pinched Sciatic Nerve

UPDATE:

Friends,

It turns out that I probably do not have a nerve injury. The doctor today did a examination and thinks that my trapezius is cramped. She said she could feel a knot or lump in my trap region. Can you believe that?

All I can say that I have felt paralyzed from the injury and was certain it was something worse. This would explain why I feel the pain so high in my back region and also why the pain eventually spread to my shoulder and arm.

I still look like a person who was in a serious car accident. I cannot turn my neck to the left or right now without a stabbing pain. So when I look in either direction I have to turn in that direction from my waist and move my entire upper body in one stiff movement.

When I asked about the lower back pain she said it could be a secondary injury but that she wanted me to take muscle relaxers for three days and see if the upper pain goes away since it was the worse of the pains.

I have to go back in on Tuesday for a secondary exam. Presently I am on Percaset, Soma and some other drug. I hate being doped up but I am hoping this treatment works out.

Tuesday, if my upper pain is gone but the lower pain still exists I'll have to get x-rays or something. I am under strict orders not to go to work for three days and by knows means do anything physical.

So, if my posts on the forum seem wacky over the next few days just remember that I am on dope. Thanks for the concern and advice guys.

Cheers!
Jason

Lucky you. Those nerve injuries can be recurring throughout your life, I hear. Well since you hate being in a drug induced fog, and since we're homies....... hook a brutha up? big_smile

Re: Pinched Sciatic Nerve

Sounds like you need a deep tissue massage.  Sucks to be you, they hurt, at least mine did.  I had a knot in my back, kinda like that and a power lifter buddy of mine recommended the DTM.  It worked, he went right after the tight area and oh my, it lit me up.  It took about 3 sessions for him to get me feeling better and each session was easier on me but man it did not feel good.  It completely ruined the image of a message therapist, now I see more whips and chains and less Swedish blonde wearing a skimpy top.  Maybe something to consider if you doc thinks its ok.  Glad it wasn’t worse.

Re: Pinched Sciatic Nerve

^^^

I've had shoulder problems both from RSI/too much computer, compounded by injuries from training, and I can't agree with Misfit more.

In addition to DTM, look up myofascial/trigger-point release therapy...both closely related, and highly recommended. About 2 years ago, I was working full time and going to school; all involving ridiculous hours hunched over in front of a computer, and I really f'ed up my shoulder to the point where I couldn't lift my arm above my head, and MFT really saved my butt.

After your doc confirms that it's related to that cramp rather than any nerve issues of course.

Hope the perkies help!

Re: Pinched Sciatic Nerve

Cool or uncool that somebody else has gone through it.  Hey Ploppy, does the MFT hurt like the DTM.  I could have been being a wuss, it was a really sore area but man, I wasn't sure how I was going to last 20 to 30 minutes of that the first time.  I had to man up and take it and I'm not sure if the guy new how much I was hurting but I was a little baby on the inside. lol  Don't mean to freak you out Jas, best pain I ever went through but it will change your image of a "massage", at least it did me.

Oh man...it's definitely a case of no pain no gain. Excruciating, but so worth it. A lot of the pain depends how bad your knot/cramp is.  I'm not the toughest guy on the block, but I think I have decent pain tolerance. But if I go through one of these sessions when I'm when I'm really bad, and the guy/girl really has to push hard, I would definitely be tapping if there was a ref there to stop it.

If I'm doing ok, and I have a more preventative session, than it can actually feel pretty good. I also find (now that I'm older and need to stretch more) that if I've been pretty good abvout stretching, then the sessions also hurt less, but I think that's as much me taking better general care of myself than a direct 1 to 1 thing.

Re: Pinched Sciatic Nerve

Well guys I also had a bout with Sciatica. It was back in 1999 and it came on from lifting too much weight and compressed the sciatic nerve causing pain and numbness from my ass down to my foot. I laid on my back with a couple of pillows under my knees for 2 weeks. I also took prescribed steroid pills. It got better but it was slow to recuperate. I can say that I don't have much trouble these days but every night I stretch out on the floor. Here's a link to give you more info..http://www.spine-health.com/topics/cons … aex01.html

I really wouldn't call what I had a back injury as much as more shoulder blade/shoulder hurt/injury.  I was training really hard for a black belt test, a lot of lifting and contact training.  My right shoulder had enough, it got so screwy it started to bother my left hip the way it was leaning.  I quit lifting and lighten the contact training for about 3 weeks while I was getting the DTM's.  I do still get tight every now and then but nothing like that time.  But I also don't spend close to 4 hours of training like I was then. roll

Re: Pinched Sciatic Nerve

how do fighters who dedicate so much time every day to train not get crazy injuries like this?

I mean well of course i know they hv injuries, but i mean with their intense routines how do they avoid not "overworking"?
Truth is they all push their bodies to and beyond the limits.

Like misfit, I don't have any recurring back problems...I had a pinched nerve a while back, but that hasn't bothered me since. My problems are also my shoulders...I had pretty bad RSI in my left arm from too much computer, and then I tore  my left rotator cuff on top of that. That's all healed up, and the RSI hardly bothers me at all anymore, so if I'm good about stretching, I don't even need myofascial...I still do it at least once or twice a year for maintenance (it's kind of pricey, but worth every penny if you can find a good practitioner).

Truth is they all push their bodies to and beyond the limits.

The established fighters all have support staffs that look after their well-being. People that know the limits of the human body and how to aid/quicken recover when its been exceeded. The really tough position is left to those that are trying to break into the sport. Their stuck with training to the max without the benefits of the $ to cover the expenses associated with support personnel.
A lot of pro fighters also do things like yoga and regular massages to prevent potential injuries.
However, these precautions obviously do prevent/remedy all injuries as you can see from fighters that are forced to postpone matches due to injuries, etc.
