Report: A 'disappointed' Yoshihiro Akiyama 'not pleased' with UFC 116 change in opponent

Chris Leben may be Zuffa's new company man, but it doesn't sound like he's a sexy enough replacement for Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 116: "Lesnar vs. Carwin" on July 3.

"The Crippler" was called up on short notice to replace Wanderlei Silva in the pay-per-view's co-main event when "The Axe Murderer" suffered a broken rib in training. While fans let out a collective groan over the incident, most were able to accept Leben as an adequate replacement considering the time constraints.

Akiyama? Not so much, according to his comments on Korea's Daum.net (translated by Fighter's Only):

Sexyama wrote:

"I am not pleased with the change. There are just ten days left until the contest for me to determine [Leben’s] threats and the time is insufficient to establish a tailored gameplan. Leben is also not as high-profile as [Wanderlei] Silva and that does not help me. If there is to be a replacement I was hoping for a big name. I spent one year preparing hard for this fight and this news has come as a big disappointment, my motivation has waned. I do not know yet what will happen ... In the worst case, I will not take part in the [UFC 116] event. We are working hard to resolve this issue."

It's hard to imagine a scenario where "Sexyama" withdraws from the promotion's biggest show of the year, but it doesn't bode well for the Judo master to be heading into his July 3 contest unfocused.

Akiyama hasn't competed since a razor thin split decision over Alan Belcher in his UFC debut nearly one year ago. Now he must overcome a sizable layoff, a change in opponents and a lack of motivation. Can he pull himself together and take his frustrations out on Leben?

We'll know soon enough.

I think Yoshihiro should be careful of what he says... I hope he doesn't underestimate Leben just because he's not as high profile like Wanderlei, otherwise it will be a bad night for Yoshihiro... Remember when Jardine complained about a no-namer .. some guy named Houston Alexander..... lol

Re: Sexyama disappointed and not pleased with replacement opponent

Boo fucking hoo...your opponent gets hurt 2 weeks before the fight, you should be thanking Leben for stepping up and taking the fight. Leben might not be Wanderlei Silva but he's just as much, if mot more, of a threat standing up as Wand. Also keep in mind that Leben was at one time just a single win away from a title shot.

If Akiyama backs out of this fight I`ll lose a lot of respect for him.

Re: Sexyama disappointed and not pleased with replacement opponent

I really had no opinion of this guy until now. Now, I hope Leben hits him in his whiney fuckin mouth so hard that he dreams sideways. And just for good measure, when Leben is doing his post fight interview with Rogan, I hope he mentions Akiyama's comments on how he felt he was too good to fight Leben.

sounds like a pussy excuse.

doesn't endear to anyone by saying that kind of stuff. he's a fighter and he should fight whoever. leben is a decent enough substitute. and to be honest, i think chris has better than a puncher's chance in this bout.

Re: Sexyama disappointed and not pleased with replacement opponent

Could be a big win for Leben. I personally think he is on the upswing, and would like to see him get in there with some higher-ranking guys. A win over this whine-ass might be just what Leben needs to get back on the PPV main cards.

This fight card sucks.......As much as I want to see Carwin / Lesner get it on.....This is likely the first card I won' tbe buying in some time.....

I though Dana promised fans (after the Andrewson Silva in Dubi bullsh*t) that he was gong to make it up to us by putting on top notch cards from top to bottom..... This card sucks...

Wow...Any fighter that says he cant get motivated for a fight, because the person isnt a big enough name is in the wrong sport.

Re: Sexyama disappointed and not pleased with replacement opponent

I can't help but laugh to myself when I read the blantantly disrespectful comments in regards to Leben being low=profile fighter. Akiyama is a douce, Leben fought like 2 weeks ago and is stepping up huge. He trained a year for this fight against Wandi, and is crying about not being able to fight him; here is a plan, don't fight anyone then cry baby. Unbelievable, who the f*ck does this guy think he is.....he beat Alan Belcher on an extremely questionable split decision; and now he thinks he can dog his competition. Leben KTFO!

Re: Sexyama disappointed and not pleased with replacement opponent

I hate to be the one to break the news to him but dude, nobody knows who the fuck you are in the U.S.!!! If you wanna get technical, any fighter you fight is high-profile enough for you!
Ask 100 typical Americans who Chris Leben is, and depending on the community, you're gonna get at least 20 who kow who he is. Ask those same people who Yoshihiro "Sexyama" Akiyama is, and you will get 3 who think he is the president of Toyota, 12 who think he is that hot-dog eating guy, and 5 who laugh at his nickname.

Re: Sexyama disappointed and not pleased with replacement opponent

Sexyama hate is awesome, he's just speaking his mind.  He went from having a high profile fight in Wandy to having to fight Leben who just finished fighting on the undercard of TUF finale event, obviously that's disappointing news.  Unless I'm mistaken Leben has pretty much had "Gatekeeper" status for the last couple years, he has name value, but nothing in regards to moving Sexyama up the ranks or closer to a title shot.  I don't hate Leben, I'm just being honest.  The person benefiting the most from this is Leben, this is Akiyama's fight to lose right now.  I highly doubt anyone else would not have been a bit disappointed with the news.  He's also still taking the fight, so I don't understand why people are leaving comments as if Akiyama personally insulted you, it's hilarious.

Because he's being a dick about it. And didn't say he was taking the fight. He actually said he might not compete. That's why.

Re: Sexyama disappointed and not pleased with replacement opponent

Hmm, the only article I read was him saying that Leben was a more low profile fight and it wasn't as motivated.  The motivation is a personal matter but Leben being more low profile is just speaking the truth.  Although I heard he wasn't a fan of Leben's samurai tattoo but I don't know if he was a dick about that tongue

Yea I heard he's supposed to decided within the next 12 hours, but his blog said something like "I had various choices but ... I'll do my best in my fight!" so I thought he was game.

Re: Sexyama disappointed and not pleased with replacement opponent

I don't know..... maybe it's something lost in the translation, but it comes off very cocky and self-righteous to me.
Not to steroetype, but isn't he like a movie star and uber-celebrity over in Japan? I sort of get the impression that he feels like he is on that level in the States as well, and he surley is not.

*edit* By stereotype, I meant stuck-up celebrity, not Japanese. Just wanted to make sure nobody took that the wrong way.  lol

Re: Sexyama disappointed and not pleased with replacement opponent

Yea he's definitely a superstar over there, hence him waiting so long to fight Wandy, the guy definitely doesn't need the paycheck whatsoever.  It could be the translation but it's still a little condescending, however, I still think it's true and I don't particularly fault him for saying so, I would be annoyed if he doesn't confirm that he's still fighting though.
