If that is indeed true that would have been a sick fight. I'd still go with Nog FTW.

Jones told me he turned down Lil Nog when I was teaching him how to wrestle. Then I called him a little girl and put him in the camel-clutch, then he cried.
Hit me again tube sock, let's go!!

Re: Kimbo turned down Toney
Kevin Iole reveals in latest Yahoo!Sports mailbag that up-and-coming UFC light heavyweight star John Jones declined a slot on the upcoming UFC 114 card as a fill-in for Forrest Griffin against Antônio Rogério Nogueira because he didn't feel that one month was enough time to prepare for the fight. Jones explained that he hadn't been in the gym since his win over Brandon Vera a month and a half ago at UFC LIVE: Vera vs. Jones in Broomfield, CO.
http://www.cagepotato.com/tidbit-day-jo
og-ufc-114 Jon Jones turned down the fight because he hasn’t been in the gym since his win over Brandon Vera. Thiago Silva, Ryan Bader and Vera are injured and not ready. Brilz is coming off a win over Eric Schafer, is 18-2-1 and is 13-1-1 in his last 15. Plus, Nogueira was contractually owed a fight and no one else was available. And do you think the UFC wouldn’t want to make the best possible fight? It’s trying to sell, so do you think it wants to put a fight on people wouldn’t be interested in? I don’t.

Re: Kimbo turned down Toney
Jones and lil Nog will fight eventually, would you take that fight on a months notice?? i dunno. For Bones that would be by far the biggest fight of his life, Id want a full camp for Little Nog.

Re: Kimbo turned down Toney
So... he's uninjured and yet he hasn't been training for over a month? Thats crazy, you would think after that last fight he would want another one as soon as possible and still be hittin the gym. But I guess not every one can be the gym rat that Forrest is.

Re: Kimbo turned down Toney
far be it for me to judge, but I would imagine that Dana isn't to impressed with Jones after hearing that he isn't the kid of fighter that keeps himself ready at all times. I like GSP's look on it. This is his job and he goes to work everyday the same way. I can see a vacation every now and then, so this might not be what it seems to be on the surface. He might have taken the oppurtunity to take some time off and enjoy himself since he was not injured whatsoever in his last fight. Maybe just decided now was a good time to collect his thoughts somewhere away from everything. I hope it is something like that. I always took Jones as a worker that took this thing seriously.

Re: Kimbo turned down Toney
Yeah, it's kind of odd that he hasn't been in the gym at all in the past month and a half, but I can see not wanting to take Lil Nog on in a month's notice. You could say a loss over somebody like that will just add experience, and a win will skyrocket him - but a devastating KO loss from Lil Nog could also put a huge damper on somebody's confidence, especially if they are 22/23 years old and being patient with their future in MMA. I'm sure we'll eventually see Lil Nog/Jon Jones anyways.

Re: Kimbo turned down Toney
I met Jones and spent a lot of time with him at the last Newark UFC. he was such a nice and humble guy. That being said I can definitely understand taking a few weeks off after a fight to rest and recharge, but a month and a half seems like a lot.

Re: Kimbo turned down Toney
I wouldn't want to see Jones vs Nog right now anyway. Jones is a tough, athletic guy and can hang with just about anyone out there, but 22 is REALLY young. Me might be able to beat any top tier guy out there on a given night, but he's gonna need more experience before he can beat the big dogs with consistency. Good management is the key. If he makes the wrong career choices now (i.e. not training and improving between fights and fighting really good guys too early), it would be easy for him to become another Vitor Belfort, IMO.

Re: Kimbo turned down Toney
he could be another vitor, but i doubt it. jon seems to have more up there than vitor, he is more stable. plus, 22 is not too young for glory, if im not mistaken, shogun was the grand prix champ at 22.

Re: Kimbo turned down Toney
Bones being 22 has nothing to do with anything. I dont buy the "experience" argument, its hard to fid any negatives about ths kid, and from what I understand hes a very mature 22 year old. Its simple, he doesnt want to fight Lil fuckin Nog on a months notice......would you?

Re: Kimbo turned down Toney
I'm sure Jon would agree to fight anyone if he was given enough time to prepare. But what I meant by the Vitor comment is that it seemed like he experienced so much early success that he didn't really know what to do when he got to the top. He beat his first four opponents in under two minutes, then fought Randy. When he didn't smash Randy right off the bat with his striking, he ended up losing the fight. He's a great hammer, but a weak nail. I doubt Jon would get discouraged easily if a fight wasn't going his way since he's got that determined wrestler's mentality, but let's say he gets through Nog- then what? I never said 22 was too young for glory, but you can't really compare winning a UFC belt to winning the Pride Grand Prix. You don't have to defend the Grand Prix title three times a year. Like I said, I think Jones is great and has a ton of potential, but if he beats Nog does he have the tools to get through high level guys like Shogun and Machida consistently? Maybe he does. But in another 2 years, he will for sure. Am I saying he couldn't hang with the top guys in the division right now? No. Would I like to see him take some time to improve even more and fight progressively harder guys first? Yes. I'm a big fan, and I think he's got a ton of potential. I'd like to see him keep his record as clean as possible and establish a legacy.

Re: Kimbo turned down Toney
Jones' mentioned recently that he just had a new baby. that should be all the reason he needs to be out of the gym after his win over Vera. but 1 month may be asking too much, even of an elite fighter. fighter filling in at the last moment generally doesn't finish with a "W" against their names. for instance, remember when Kos step into fight Thiago Alves at the last moment. he got owned badly.
