Topic: Sherk's fighting Edgar, not Huerta
The fight is set for UFC 98, in May. I'm not sure if they have someone else lined up for Huerta, but this will be a good fight either way. Edgar has looked pretty good lately (got FoN with Franca), but I see Sherk manhandling him ala Gray Maynard. Sherk's just too strong, imo, and has better striking. It will probably go to decision, but should be action packed. Former lightweight champion Sean Sherk (33-3) will attempt to get one step closer to reclaiming his 155-pound title when he collides with top division contender Frank Edgar (9-1) at UFC 98 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 23.

Re: Sherk's fighting Edgar, not Huerta
I think this will be the fight that sends Edgar down to 145. The WEC is catching steam and that weight class is really starting to get stacked with talent (Brown, Faber, Garcia, Pulver).

Re: Sherk's fighting Edgar, not Huerta
Edgar has had quite a bit of success at 155, despite being slightly undersized. His lack of size is going to be A LOT more noticeable next to sherk. I am a huge fan of Edgar, and I have loved all the fights he has been in in the UFC so far, but I do think that if he drops to 145, he will be the champ there. He is doing great at 155, but he would do so much better at 145. Better to rule in hell than to serve in heaven, basically.

Re: Sherk's fighting Edgar, not Huerta
I really like and respect both fighters, but I'm in agreement with both GS and asugar, Edgar's size will be exposed horribly in this fight. I expect Sherk to decisively beat him. WAR GOOD FIGHTS AT 155!!!

Agreed. I am a huge fan of Edgar, but I really do think his weight class is at the 145 level.

Re: Sherk's fighting Edgar, not Huerta
I like Frankie. I don't know if anyone remembers, but I wrote an article for my sports blog (link in my sig) about Edgar a while back. I pretty much said the same things every one is saying. How ever. Edgar's problem with Maynard was not only Gray's size and strength, but the fact Grey is a better wrestler. I have to look at Sherk's wrestling credentials... but I wouldn't count Edgar out.

I think everyone is in agreement. The size will be key in this fight. We'll see what happens.

Ofcourse I'm going with one of my Fav fighters, Muscle Shark. After this, I'd like if Shark faced off against Huerta.

Re: Sherk's fighting Edgar, not Huerta
I think if he drops to 145 he would own everyone at that weight for the most part. I also think if he stays at 155 he will also continue to do fine.

This. At 155, he's better than almost anyone, but at 145? He'd be a BEAST.

I agree. Repeat of Edgar vs Maynard.

I agree but I think Sherk finishes it in the second or early third.

Yup, Sherk's striking is leagues above Maynard's at this point.

By that logic Maynard is a better striker than Liddell... just cause Maynard caught someone 9 sec into the fight does not mean that he is a superior striker.

Well, how many T/KO's does Maynard have? Sherk's got about 8. And his striking didn't look that bad against BJ, imo. He was just giving up way too much in reach and got suckered into playing BJ's game. Plus, Joe Veres isn't exactly a top contender.

Re: Sherk's fighting Edgar, not Huerta
OK, but seriously...Sherk has fantastic boxing, in a technical sense. BUT, he uses it to set up takedowns and control the tempo, not to actually hurt his opponents. Maynard has very heavy hands, much heavier than Sherk. As such, since Maynard couldn't finish it, I doubt Sherk will. His striking is above Maynard's, but not in any way is it more likely to finish fights.

But Maynard did not stand with Edgar he took him down and layed on him for three rounds he did very little GnP which is what I think the difference will be in the fight. Sherk will not just take Edgar down and lay on him.

Re: Sherk's fighting Edgar, not Huerta
Layed on him? I disagree with that, but either way, you have a point about Sherk possibly choosing to just keep this fight on the feet. Of course, it probably wouldn't be smart, considering the fact that Sherk could control him down on the ground with a lot less risk than choosing to trade, even though I think Sherk has the advantage there. Still, the biggest difference between Sherk and Gray (at least in comparing them fighting/finishing Edgar) is that Sherk does not gas. Gray slowed down significantly in the third round, but Sherk won't.

Re: Sherk's fighting Edgar, not Huerta
I don’t know if Sherk will keep it standing or not but if he does take it to the ground, but I do think Sherk is much more likely to end the fight via a choke (Edgar wll give up his back to try and get away from Sherks GnP) than a KO. I just think Sherk is better overall on the ground than Maynard is. Sure Maynard is probably stronger and can control the grappling a little better but what he lacks is being able to transition from grappling to GnP and from GnP to a finish (like a choke) Gray is still a very raw fighter and I think he will eventually get those skills but he definitely did not have them in his fight against Edgar.

Re: Sherk's fighting Edgar, not Huerta
Sherk will keep the fight standing for awhile, and probably depending on how that goes, he will either continue to keep it standing and box in Edgar's face, or take it to the ground where I'm almost positive he is better than Edgar on the ground just like he is standing, so I really can't see Edgar winning this fight. Only way I can see Edgar pulling this one off is if, he happens to land a big lucky shot while Sherk is feeling out the stand-up which isn't very likely IMO
